A Note From The Doctor:

Determining your health by the absence of pain and symptoms can be fatal. Health is more than the absence of pain and symptoms. We have all heard the stories of the person who unexpectedly dies of a heart attack without any prior pain or symptoms or the persons who suffers a stroke without any warning or the person who suddenly gets severe back pain radiating down the legs by simply picking up a pencil. Were these people healthy the day before their attacks?

According to Dorland's Medical Dictionary, "Health is a state of optimal mental, physical and social well being, not merely the absence of disease and infirmities.” Webster"s Dictionary states, “Health is a condition of wholeness in which all the organs are functioning at 100% all the time.” For this to happen your nervous system must be working at it’s optimum with out any interferences. Gray’s Anatomy declares, “The purpose of the nervous system is to control and coordinate the function of all tissues, organs and systems in the body.” A chiropractor removes joint dysfunctions, frees nerves and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Like cancer, heart disease or hypertension, uncorrected joint dysfunction can cause considerable damage by the time symptoms become obvious.

The following is the story of how I got involved in chiropractic:

I was a martial arts instructor for many years and during my training I hurt my lower back. In addition to the pain in my back I had pain and tingling radiating down both legs. I owned a karate studio at the time and thought it was the end of my business along with my career. I went to see an orthopedic surgeon who performed a vast variety of testing to determine what was wrong and what my options were. I had a “bulging disc,” and after going over my options we decided on a micro-discectomy surgery. The surgeon cut through the muscle, soft tissue and, what I would later learn, a nerve of my lower back and shaved the bulge off the disc. The days following the surgery I was worse off than when I originally went in. I now had foot drop on the right and the surface area over my right hamstring and buttock was completely numb. After a few weeks of recovery and physical therapy my leg pain was slightly less than before the surgery and I could lift my right foot but the numbness remained. Within the next few months my right calf atrophied to 1 1/2” smaller than the left and the pain in my back and legs began to return. I could barely walk, only to find out that the disc had “re-bulged.” The solution presented by the orthopedic surgeon was another surgery, this was not an option.

I was determined to get better, without another surgery, so I went to see a chiropractor. Within a week, after a series of daily adjustments the pain in my legs and back began to disappear, I was able to walk and return to my daily activities of living and tending to my business. To me it was a miracle, I knew I was on track to getting my life back.

As my pain began to reduce my friends realized my attitude was becoming more positive and I was more pleasant to be around. Continued adjustments allowed me to strengthen my back and right calf, return to my martial arts and to teach cardio kickboxing classes. What I had not realized is the other benefits of chiropractic I was to experience. Since being adjusted regularly I have not been sick for longer than a day and I can not remember when I had a cold or the flu.

After experiencing such success thru my own chiropractic experience, I decided that I too wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. I make sure my wife stays well adjusted and since their births I adjust our children regularly to maintain their health, their spines and nervous systems.

Chiropractic is not a cure. It does not cure your pain, symptoms and diseases. Using gentle adjustments a chiropractor aligns your spine and restores normal joint movement which allows proper nerve messages to flow from your brain down the spine and out to all your cells, tissues and organs. Proper alignment and joint movement also allows the information from your cells, tissues and organs to be delivered to the brain so it knows everything going on in your body at all times. This proper communication enables your body to heal itself naturally.

I now feel it is my duty to share with others the power of chiropractic and make sure others do not make the same under informed decision I made. Being a chiropractor I see miracles happen everyday and this is very rewarding. Give us a call and get your own, your family’s, and your friend’s spinal health checked.

God Bless,

Dr. Michael Richey, D.C.
